Mercedes Perez speaks at York University Mental Health Law course


York University‘s Osgoode Certificate In Mental Health Law was held over the course of five days in September and October 2021. This Certificate is now in its 10th year and is a program designed to provide practice-focused skills and expertise to manage mental health law related issues.  The program covers a range of relevant legal topics in the area of mental health law, including institutional risk and liability, patient rights and patient care.

Mercedes Perez was invited to speak on two panels convened as part of this Certificate program on October 5, 2021. Mercedes co-instructed an afternoon panel with lawyer Kathleen MacDougall from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health on the topic “Frequent Issues in Consent and Capacity Board Appeals”. Later in the day, Mercedes joined Kathleen MacDougall, lawyer Lonny Rosen and forensic psychiatrist Dr. Misha Hartfiel on a panel discussing Consent and Capacity Board related practice issues.
