Mercedes Perez was a guest speaker at the Ontario Bar Association‘s program titled Cultural Competency & Elder Law: Practical and Ethical Considerations. The program was held today, December 2, 2021 and was chaired by lawyer Diane Vieira from de Vries Litigation. Mercedes presented alongside her fellow guest speakers, lawyer Omar Ha-Redeye and Pia Hundal on a range of issues relevant to cultural competency and elder law. These topics included: representing clients who are not proficient in the English language, conducting capacity assessments with interpreters, the role of third parties such as family members as support persons in the lawyer-client relationship, cultural concerns in the provision of health care services and in civil mediations, and assessing elder abuse in different ethno-cultural communities.
